World Water Monitoring Day
World Water Monitoring Day

Overview

This program is coordinated by Water at Environment Federation (WEF) and the International Water Association (IWA) and aims at building public awareness in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens and especially young children to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies. More than 70 countries from all over the world participate in this program.

An easy-to-use test kit enables everyone from children to adults to sample local water bodies for a core set of water quality parameters. Results are shared with participating communities around the globe through the World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) Web site.

World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) is officially celebrated on September 18; however, the monitoring window was extended for the first time in 2009 from March 22 (World Water Day) until December 31.

The Host

The World Water Monitoring Day in Cyprus is hosted by Dr. Despo Fatta-Kassinos and the Nireas-IWRC GAIA Laboratory of Environmental Engineering. The event has been successfully hosted since 2009, with dozens of "young researchers" actively paricipating in it.
